It’s all systems go at the Gold Coast Airport, with the popular terminal preparing for one of its busiest summer holidays on record.
More than 1.2 million passengers are expected over December and January, with 20,000 passengers tipped to travel through the airport on the busiest days alone.
The most popular routes include Sydney and Melbourne, with New Zealand proving the most popular of the international connections.
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Christmas and the first week of January are shaping up to be the busiest travel days.
“We’re prepared to handle these busy periods, we’ve rostered on additional team members and have 57 volunteer Ambassadors and five therapy dogs who are here to help customers,” Ms Charlton said.
“The terminal will be busy so we’re encouraging passengers to book their parking online, check-in online and allow plenty of time to get to and through the airport,” she said.
The addition of Bonza’s 14 new routes to Gold Coast Airport’s network is also expected to provide a significant boost to passenger numbers.
“Bonza’s services have the potential to bring 15 thousand extra passengers through our terminal each week with many of the destinations new to our network, helping friends and family to connect more easily over the summer holidays,” Ms Charlton said.
“Our connections with New Zealand are also performing exceptionally well – Auckland services are our busiest international route,” she said.
It comes after the Gold Coast was named by travel website Wotif as the number one destination for Aussies looking for a Christmas getaway this year.
