We’re being urged to keep the brolly handy this week, with more than 60 millimetres of rain forecast to fall across the Gold Coast over the next few days.

It comes after Gold Coasters were treated to a spectacular lightning show overnight as thunderstorms made their way across the South East before moving offshore around midnight.

While the city escaped most of the heavy rainfall, other parts of the region recorded rainfall totals between 25mm and 50mm, with some isolated falls of 90mm.

The wet weather is tipped to continue today, with another 20 millimetres of rain forecast for the Gold Coast.

There’s also the chance we could see a thunderstorm every afternoon this week.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the storm activity is being caused by a surface trough.

“We do have a surface trough running through southeast Queensland into northeast NSW, that does help moisture lift in the atmosphere,” Meteorologist Helen Reid said.

“We have a lot of extra tropical moisture already feeding in for the season, and with warm temperatures yesterday it’s a good recipe for thunderstorms”.

It will also be another warm week, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s before dropping slightly over the weekend.
