We’re being warned more storms could be on the way for the South East today, including the Gold Coast, after wild weather lashed the region yesterday.
The severe cells brought destructive winds, heavy rain, lightning and giant hail to some parts.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued multiple weather alerts throughout the afternoon and evening, including several for “very dangerous” storms.
As of 7.30pm, Energex confirmed 158,000 lightning strikes had hit the South East, sparking mass power outages.
Almost 500 properties remain in darkness this morning.
According to the weather bureau, we could see a repeat of the storm action later today, with residents urged to prepare.
“Today there is the potential for severe thunderstorms across the Gold Coast, and there’s even the risk of giant-sized hail, more so about the Hinterland and the Scenic Rim,” Meteorologist Sarah Scully said.
“But on the actual Gold Coast itself, there is the potential for large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall for the storms that do form”.
The wild weather is expected to start gaining some pace from mid-afternoon.
“From early afternoon we’ll start to see the storms starting to pop up and the risk continuing through to the evening,” Ms Scully said.
It’s being caused by a surface trough that’s currently pushing up from the NSW Coast to the South East, combining with an upper level trough.
