An emotional candlelight vigil has been held in Elanora overnight to pay tribute to local woman Wendy Sleeman.
More than 100 people gathered at a park near Ms Sleeman’s home to remember the much-loved 61-year-old.
Ms Sleeman disappeared from her Elanora home last Tuesday, sparking a desperate search by police who discovered a significant amount of blood inside the bathroom of her property.
Sadly, her body was found in the boot of a car in Brisbane two days later after a police analysis of electronic devices led them to a garage at Windsor.
Ms Sleeman’s son Slade Murdok has since been charged over her death and remains in custody.
State Member for Currumbin Laura Gerber was among those in attendance at the vigil overnight.
“Wendy was a strong woman with an enormous heart. She was funny and stubborn and sacrificed so much,” Ms Gerber said.
“She was an integral part of Autism Gold Coast foundation group, Gold Coast ASD Support Group.
“And made a significant difference to the lives of many families in the Autism community.”
Ms Gerber vowed to push for change to ensure what happened to Wendy never happens again.
“Wendy was taken from us far too soon in the most tragic and horrific of circumstances,” she said.
“There will be time to look at what could have been done better to protect Wendy.
“This needs to happen and I will be there to demand we do better.
“But tonight our community came together to support each other in our grief and remember Wendy.
“She touched the lives of those she met and her legacy will be remembered.”
