The streets of Surfers Paradise will roar back to life with the sound of Supercars this weekend, with the GC500 set to get underway from Friday.
This year’s event is extra special, as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Supercars’ first visit to the famous streets in 1994.
Major road traffic changes will be in place to accommodate the race, with locals and visitors warned to expect delays on their commute through the area.
“Police are urging residents and visitors to plan their journeys ahead of the Gold Coast 500, with several road closures scheduled to ensure the safety and success of the event,” Queensland Police said.
“The Gold Coast 500, taking place from October 25 to 27, will see key roads in the Main Beach and Surfers Paradise precincts temporarily closed to accommodate race activities and ensure smooth traffic flow for both participants and spectators”.
Key road closures:
- Gold Coast Highway will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Waterways Drive and Surfers Paradise Boulevard (near Golden Gate Resort) from October 21 to October 28.
- Gold Coast Highway will be reduced to one northbound lane from Thomas Drive to Waterways Drive from October 21 to October 28.
- Various side streets within Main Beach and Surfers Paradise will also be affected, with access restricted for residents and businesses, leading up to and during the event.

Police have been working in collaboration with event organisers and local authorities to try and minimise disruption.
“We understand the Gold Coast 500 is a highly anticipated event, but we are also mindful of the impact it may have on local traffic and residents,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.
“Our goal is to ensure the event runs smoothly, while keeping everyone safe and informed about road closures and alternative routes.
“Police will have a strong presence throughout the event, ensuring public safety and compliance with road closures.
“We remind all attendees and residents to respect the road closure zones and follow police directions.”
Public transport services, including buses and the G:Link light rail, will continue to operate, however, there will be some adjustments to routes and timetables.
