Local motorists are being warned there will be a number of major road closures across the city over the weekend due to the Gold Coast Marathon.

More than 30,000 competitors are set to hit the pavement for the much-anticipated event, which is the biggest the city has ever hosted.

It will be conducted over two days, Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7.

Those not lacing up the runners are being reminded it may be a little harder to get around, with several roads to be blocked off to traffic.

“Motorists are urged to avoid traveling anywhere along the route over the two day event due to diversions that will be in place,” Senior Sergeant Des Hearn said.

“Delays can be expected and motorists need to watch out for competitors and fun runners.”

More than 100 police officers will be on hand during the two days, accompanied by 200 marshals to ensure there’s minimise disruption to local residents and businesses as much as possible.
