A Gold Coast man has been identified as one of two people killed in a horror crash in Brisbane’s Legacy Way tunnel

Bruce Daley, from Oxenford, died after his black Audi ploughed into the back of a Mazda in the tunnel Mt Coot-Tha on Wednesday.

The passenger in the Mazda, a 24-year-old woman from the Northern Territory, also suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda, a 23-year-old South Australian woman, was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

It’s understood the pair were on their way to a wedding when their vehicle was struck.

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Hansel confirmed police were investigating whether speed was a factor.

It’s understood Mr Daley, 56, medically retired from the Queensland Police Service 10 years ago.

When asked whether self-harm was also being probed, Detective Acting Inspector Hansel said he was “unable to comment”.

“I’m unable to comment on exact scenarios at this stage as you would appreciate it is a very complex investigation… A very confronting scene that was experienced by our first responders and members of the public last night.

“It would be again irresponsible for me to nominate a specific scenario without the full investigation having been undertaken,” he said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing for anyone who saw the Audi prior to the incident, or who may have any further information that could assist police, to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing.
