City of Gold Coast has released an advice warning for some residents as the heavy rain starts to settle in across the city.

“The City of Gold Coast advises people in areas close to Gold Coast rivers and creeks to MONITOR CONDITIONS for flooding,” City of Gold Coast warns.

“A trough in western Queensland is drawing deep moisture inland. This system is expected to move further east during Saturday, extending the risk of flooding to South East Queensland. Conditions could become dangerous. There is a risk of moderate to heavy rainfall over the Gold Coast during Friday evening into Saturday.

“Emergency services and Council are working to assist the community. However, you should not expect authorities at your door.”

It comes after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a Flood Watch for South East Queensland, including Gold Coast rivers and creeks as well as the Logan and Albert Rivers.

“Widespread showers and storms with areas of heavy rainfall are expected to continue across the Flood Watch area, which may result in minor to moderate flooding, with isolated major flooding possible west of the Great Divide,” the BOM warning states.

“The trough is likely to move towards the southeast bringing moderate to heavy rainfall over the southeastern quarter of the state later Friday into Saturday, shifting the flood risk area. The trough will contract further east and weaken on Sunday.

“Catchments within the Flood Watch area are wet. Minor to major flood warnings are current for catchments across parts of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Gulf Country, inland regions and the southeast coast.

“Localised river level rises, and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall. Localised flooding, isolation of communities and disruption to transport routes are possible within the Flood Watch area over the next few days.”
