Fire crews have spent the night battling a massive blaze at a rubbish tip on the northern Gold Coast.

Emergency services were called to the Stapylton Waste and Recycling Centre along Rossmanns Road just before 6.30pm.

Upon arrival, they found a blaze had broken out in rubbish causing a significant amount of smoke to billow over the suburb.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson told myGC the fire was the size of a football field.

It took fire crews, along with multiple council crews with water tanks, around five hours to extinguish.

It is not being treated as suspicious.
