LATEST @ 8.30 AM | Police have confirmed they’re investigating a large fire at an abandoned unit block in Surfers Paradise this morning.
The blaze erupted inside the five-storey complex along Garfield Terrace just before 6am, sparking a major emergency response.
More than six crews, including a crane, were called to battle the blaze which is understood to have engulfed several floors of the building.
A number of people who were inside the property at the time had to be rescued by fire crews, however, all managed to escape uninjured.
It’s not yet known how the fire started, but police are treating the inferno as suspicious.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious at this stage,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.
“Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have information to contact Policelink or Crimestoppers”.
EARLIER @ 7 AM | Emergency services have rushed to a unit block in Surfers Paradise this morning after a fire broke out in one of the apartments.
The inferno erupted in the five-storey complex along Garfield Terrace just before 6am, sparking the massive emergency response.
Six fire crews remain on scene, with paramedics also on standby at the scene.
Garfield Terrace has been blocked in both directions, with motorists being urged to avoid the area.
