LATEST @ 3.30PM | Two men have been charged following an incident in Parkwood that saw a police officer violently assaulted.
Police were called by a member of the public to Greenacre Drive after spotting two men asleep inside a damaged black Lexus car.
When a female officer approached the car, one of the men, a 40-year-old, lashed out and allegedly began assaulting her.
The officer tasered the man in an attempt to stop him, but he continued to be violent – with police saying he was “drug-effected”.
A search of the vehicle allegedly located a firearm, ammunition and items used in property offences.
Superintendent Scott Knowles admits the attack was confronting.
“It just highlights the dangers that our police officers face when they turn out to a routine job,” Superintendent Knowles says.
“The search of the vehicle located a loaded revolver inside the vehicle,
“But it was certainly a struggle there, she is not the biggest of police officers but she put up a very good fight in an attempt to restrain this offender. He was drug-effected.”
The female officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a head injury and abrasions.
The other man, a 36-year-old, fled the scene but was tracked down a short distance away by police.
During an earlier incident, it will also be alleged the same 40-year-old man stole a grey BMW from a business on Ferry Road in Southport just before midday on Tuesday.
The owner of the car then tracked the vehicle and approached the driver at an address in Tugan, where the driver allegedly produced what appeared to be a gun and threatened him.
The driver then allegedly left the scene in the stolen car, which was subsequently tracked by Polair.
No one was injured during the incident.
The car was found abandoned around 9.20pm that same day at a carpark of a business at Surfers Paradise.
A 40-year-old Carina man has since been charged with 15 offences, including four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of going armed to cause fear, one count of serious assault police officer causing grievous bodily harm, unlawful possession of weapons (Category H) in public.
A 36-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with five offences arising from this morning’s arrest, including serious assault of a police officer, unlawful possession of weapons (Category H) in public and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
Both men are expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on December 14.
EARLIER @ 8.20AM | TWO men have been arrested after a female police officer was injured during a welfare check in Parkwood this morning.
Police were called to Greenacre Drive around 5.30am after a concerned resident reported seeing a damaged black Lexus parked on the street with two men asleep inside.
As officers approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly became violent towards police, resulting in a female officer being assaulted.
The male passenger ran from the scene, but was tracked down nearby a short time later and taken into custody.
Backup was called in and a search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a firearm, ammunition and other items used in property offences.
The female officer has been taken to hospital for treatment of a head injury and abrasions, but is believed to be stable.
Investigations are ongoing.
