The fate of the controversial Gold Coast lights on the M1 at Yatala could be decided today.

The lights, which spell out ‘Gold Coast’, have been mocked ever since they were installed on the motorway before the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

They cost ratepayers $2.1 million dollars but can’t even be seen properly unless you stand on the side of the motorway.

Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee last week voted in favour of spending $250,000 to remove the lights before selling them off.

But there are reports it will end up being much higher than that, with Council set to be presented with other costings today.

There’s predictions it could cost as much as $2 million to remove the lights and install them somewhere else, prompting speculation they will remain put for now.

Full Council will debate the artwork’s future at a meeting today.
