UPDATE @ DECEMBER 9 | A day out in the sun has turned to tragedy for two mates after one drowned whilst swimming at a popular spot on the Gold Coast.
The 29-year-old is believed to have been sitting on a net with a friend at the Paradise Point parklands around 4pm on Sunday when he reportedly jumped outside of the enclosure.
It’s understood he was then pushed into the netting by a strong current before becoming entangled and failing to resurface from the water.
Emergency crews including Water Police, PolAir and the Police Dive Squad rushed to the scene and launched a frantic search.
Despite their efforts, the man’s body was located just before 8pm.
Police have confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
EARLIER @ December 8 | Emergency crews are currently responding to a major incident unfolding at Paradise Point on the Gold Coast.
A man is understood to have gone missing from the popular swimming enclosure at the parklands, sparking a frantic search.
There’s reports he became stuck in the nets and failed to resurface, with grave fears being held for the swimmer.
Water Police, Firefighters, Queensland Ambulance crews and the rescue helicopter are all on scene.
A council spokesperson confirmed in a statement to Hot Tomato that it was working with emergency services.
“The City is aware of the incident that occurred this afternoon within the swimming enclosure at Paradise Point Parklands,” the spokesperson said.
“We are actively cooperating with authorities to understand the cause of the incident.
“The city will provide any assistance it can to emergency services to assist in this matter”.
The incident unfolded whilst the parklands was packed with people enjoying the warm Summer’s day.
Temperatures reached 34 degrees on the Gold Coast on Sunday, but the ‘feels like’ temp was more like 40C.
