An elderly woman has died in hospital a day after being hit by an alleged drink-driver in Tugun.

Emergency crews were called to Teemangum Street around 7pm on Saturday following reports an 83-year-old woman had been struck by a black Mazda 3 hatchback.

The woman, who was visiting from overseas, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Police confirmed in a statement on Monday morning that she sadly passed away in hospital overnight.

The driver of the Mazda, a 30-year-old Currumbin man, allegedly fled the scene but was tracked down sitting inside his vehicle outside a Currumbin address a short time later.

He was issued with a notice to appear for mid-range drink driving and will front Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25.
