The driver of a van that allegedly hit and killed a 9-year-old boy out on a bike ride with his family on the Gold Coast has been charged with manslaughter.

The young boy was a passenger on an e-bike being ridden by his father, 46, when a Honda Odyssey ploughed into them in Robina in October last year.

The father and son were rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital with serious injuries, where the boy sadly died the following day.

The child’s mother and brother, who were riding another bike, witnessed the horror accident but managed to escape uninjured.

Following investigations into the crash, and after receiving the results of blood tests, police have now charged the driver of the van with a string of offences.

The 47-year-old man from Ashmore has been charged with manslaughter, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance whilst excessively speeding, and high-range drink driving.

He has been remanded in custody to front Southport Magistrates Court on March 6.
