A driver is being questioned by police after allegedly ditching his crashed car in Southport.

The vehicle is believed to have lost control while travelling along Olsen Avenue around midnight.

It rolled down an embankment, smashing through signs, before ending up on its side in a shopping centre car park.

When officers arrived, the occupants of the vehicle had already left the scene, leaving the wreckage of the vehicle behind.

A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed they located the alleged driver, a 34-year-old man, at a nearby address a short time later.

Investigations are continuing.
