The effort to restore the Gold Coast’s battered beaches following Tropical Cyclone Alfred will ramp up today with dredging set to begin.
A dredging vessel has been docked at Southport for over a week because of a dispute between council and the federal government over who would foot the bill.
But council has decided it can wait no longer.
The vessel will begin its work near the Seaway before moving to other parts of the coastline, particularly along our northern beaches which copped the brunt of Alfred.
It comes as the Mayor concedes his promise to have all beaches fixed by Easter won’t be met.
The full restoration is expected to take up to six months, however, Tom Tate is confident at least 80 per cent will be right by the holidays.
