We all know the Gold Coast is the hub of Australia’s movie industry, but we want to rewind the clock a little and concentrate on a little-known 80s movie that was shot here.
Does anyone remember (or want to remember) the 1982 film Goodbye Paradise which was shot on the GC?
This noir-style film popped up on a Gold Coast sub-Reddit this week and although it’s not entirely terrible, it’s a solid investment of time at just shy of 2 hours.
For your investment, you’ll get classic shots of a Gold Coast that’s long gone, including the old Surfers Paradise Hotel – now the Paradise Centre – the original Charlies as well as a beach with sunshine on it in the afternoon!
IMDB describes the flick as:
“On Queensland’s Gold Coast in the early 1980s, when a disgraced former cop, Michael Stacey writes a book exposing police corruption, does an investigation resulting in 2 murders, exposes a religious cult and watches the army begin a military coup.”
One reviewer at the time said, “ ‘Goodbye Paradise’ ends up by being an abuse of its own comic energy, a victim of its own cleverness. It is an entertainment littered with broken promises,” while another said, “Goodbye Paradise is much better than alright. It’s a lively, original movie – a good yarn put together with plenty o zing and lots of humour. In short, very good fun.”
If you’ve got a spare 2 hours and want to see the Gold Coast in it’s 80s glory, then check out the flick on YouTube or Amazon Prime or make a quick decision via the trailer below:
