The days of the controversial Gold Coast lights on the M1 at Yatala appear numbered with a council committee voting to get rid of them.
The lights, which spell out ‘Gold Coast’, have been mocked ever since they were installed on the motorway before the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
They cost ratepayers $2.1 million dollars but can’t even be seen properly unless you stand on the side of the motorway.
The future of the lights was first raised in 2020 when Council discussed moving the lights to a different location.
But that was rejected because the $250,000 cost was not seen as a good use of ratepayers’ money.
However, Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee has had a change of heart almost three years on.
It has today voted in favour of spending $250,000 to remove the lights before selling them off.
The committee also voted in favour of selling off another controversial art installation.
The silver ferns artwork cost more than $400,000 but has never seen the light of day.
It was originally meant to be installed in Surfers Paradise but has been in storage ever since it was completed.
A number of other locations were scouted, including the Botanic Gardens at Benowa.
But in the end, the committee also decided the ferns should go as well.
Both matters will be voted on by full Council in a fortnight.
