More dangerous storms are set to impact areas of the Gold Coast with a severe storm warning issued for parts of the Hinterland.

The BOM has warned that damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Warm and unstable conditions have seen storms develop to the west for the second day in a row.

A severe cell was detected on the radar near Mt Barney in the Scenic Rim around 3.15pm with that system moving towards the northeast.

It is expected to impact areas to the south of Canungra by 4.15pm, and  Mudgeeraba and Canungra by 5:05 pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
