Council has paid tribute to outgoing Deputy Mayor Donna Gates during her last full council meeting in the role.
After almost 14 years as Deputy, Councillor Gates will pass the baton to Planning Committee Chair Mark Hammel next month.
Despite talk of a last minute push to revisit the plan following Cr Gates’ excellent handling of Tropical Cyclone Alfred in Tom Tate’s absence, it didn’t eventuate.
Instead Tuesday’s meeting took time out to look back on her time in the role and thank her for contribution.
“As Mayor, I put on the record my great appreciation to Councillor Gates for her passion and love for the city,” Mayor Tom Tate said.
“Her counsel on matters will still be sought by myself going forward as the wisdom of her advice has served the city very well since she was first elected.”
Mayor Tate later went on to describe their partnership as a “dynamic duo” that delivered for the city.

An emotional Councillor Gates wiped away tears before she was presented with flowers and a bottle of champagne.
“It has just been the most amazing time for me. I just want to say thank you for the opportunity,” Councillor Gates said.
“It’s been 13 years that have gone in a flash. Today makes me feel like I’m leaving, and I’m not.
“I’m actually staying. I think I’m really excited about the future of our city. I really look forward to be actively involved as long as I have community support. For me it’s always been about community.”
Councillor Gates will remain the representative for Division 3.
