Gold Coasters will find out today whether they’ll be slugged for visiting the tip.

Full Council is set to vote on whether or not to charge locals a gate fee for dumping their rubbish at waste and recycling centres across the city.

While an exact amount has not been put forward, Brisbane residents pay around $15 each tip visit.

It’s understood the Mayor is a fan of introducing a voucher system, which would afford Gold Coasters a certain number of free visits each year.

“I favour user pay and if it means that twice a year it’s barcoded and that it’s free, then I believe that people will absolutely pack their utes and cars, because they only get two goes,” Tom Tate said.

“As a result from that, there will be less queuing at tips, and for those people who go there all the time, once you use your free two goes, then think about how many times you want to go.

“It will be much more efficient”.

The Mayor said he’s confident Council will make a decision based on what’s fair for everyone.

“I don’t want to see a levy increase throughout the whole city, because if you’re living in an apartment, hardly anyone goes to the tip,” Cr Tate said.

The proposed move follows a report which found the waste network is under strain from population growth and rising operational costs.
