A $333 million hotel planned for Movie World on the Gold Coast is a step closer with Council’s Planning Committee unanimously backing the proposal.
Village Roadshow is on track to build a 22-storey, 600-room hotel on its Movie World site.
The hotel would also boast a sky deck, bars, restaurants and function facilities.
Despite more than 20 objections from local residents, committee members ultimately voted in favour of the plan.
Councillor William Owen-Jones conceded there had been a number of hotel proposals over many years, but this was the most positive.
“I think this is probably the closest this city is going to come to having one of our major theme park owners in the north investing in a hotel outcome” Cr Owen-Jones said.
The Committee heard the hotel would create 799 jobs during construction and 400 hotel jobs in the first five years of operation.
Village Roadshow is estimating 876,000 customers at the hotel in the first five years, pumping $840 million into the local economy.
“This will be a fantastic addition to the northern Gold Coast and one that everyone will really admire,” Deputy Mayor Donna Gates said.
Full Council is expected to give the final tick of approval when it meets later this month.
