A group of thieves remain on the run after stealing a woman’s car on the Gold Coast with her seven-month-old baby still inside.

The woman had just returned to her Varsity Lakes home around midday on Wednesday.

The thieves pounced after she got out of her car and briefly stepped inside while the vehicle was still running.

They fled in her Hyundai SUV prompting a big Police response.

“One of the neighbours saw them get out, two hoodies on, jumped in the car and took off,” the woman told Nine News.

“I heard this massive screech, didn’t really think much of it then came out and the car was gone.”

Their escapade didn’t last long with the car dumped a few streets away with the baby boy still strapped in the back seat.

The thieves were seen on CCTV footage jumping into a silver hatchback, also believed to have been stolen.

Officers swarmed the scene while the unharmed baby was reunited with his mother a short time later.

“I just thought is he going to die, who has got him? I couldn’t believe it, I was just frantic. It was the most terrifying experience I’ve ever had.”
