UPDATE | An eight-year-old boy who sparked a major search after going missing while riding his scooter in Burleigh Heads has been found safe and well.

The boy’s parents lost sight of the boy while he rode along The Esplanade around 8am on Wednesday morning.

His sudden disappearance sparked a major search around Burleigh.

Lifeguards scoured the surf while helicopters also joined the search amid fears the boy may have ended up in the water.

The boy was located around 11.30am after reportedly riding his scooter all the way to Main Beach.

He has since been taken to be reunited with his parents.

EARLIER |Police are appealing for urgent public assistance to locate an 8-year-old boy reported missing in the Burleigh Heads area this morning.

The boy was last seen travelling on a scooter heading north along the Esplanade between the Burleigh Heads Surf Club and the North Burleigh Surf Club at around 8am.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact police immediately.
