UPDATE @ 5.15PM :
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:05 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Mudgeeraba and Nerang. These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. They are forecast to affect Coolangatta, Tallebudgera and Miami by 5:35 pm.
Damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.
Giant hail 8 to 9cm in diameter was observed from the very dangerous supercell near Beaudesert in the last hour.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
UPDATE @ 4.20PM: The Bureau has updated its severe storm warning for the Gold Coast as ‘very dangerous’ cell approaches the city.
“The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:10 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Beaudesert. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.
“Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Canungra, Nerang and Mount Tamborine by 4:40 pm and Mudgeeraba, Southport and waters off from Gold Coast Seaway by 5:10 pm.”
Damaging, locally destructive winds, large, possibly giant hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.

EARLIER: Severe storms are bearing down on the Gold Coast with Bureau issuing a warning for a ‘very dangerous’ thunderstorm.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:50 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Beaudesert and the area south of Canungra. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.
Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Canungra, Mount Tamborine and Tamborine by 4:20 pm and Coolangatta, Coomera and Hope Island by 4:50 pm.
