A major investigation is underway after a man suffering several stab wounds stumbled into a packed restaurant on the Gold Coast overnight.

Shocked diners at a popular Thai restaurant along the Gold Coast Highway in Mermaid Beach called emergency crews after noticing the man bleeding profusely.

Paramedics rushed to the restaurant around 8.00pm, where they treated the 31-year-old man for stab wounds to his neck, chest and abdomen.

He was then taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, where he underwent emergency surgery overnight.

A crime scene was established at both the restaurant and nearby street.

“The man may have been stabbed somewhere else and has attended the restaurant for assistance,” Sergeant Brendan Wiblen told 9NEWS.

“Just the nature of the blood trails around has created a number of issues with identifying the scene of the stabbing,” he added.

A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed to myGC this morning that detectives are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“At this time it is unclear how the man sustained the wounds or a location where it has happened,” the spokesperson said.

No arrests or complaints have been made at this stage, with detectives still yet to speak with the victim.

Investigations continue.
