The hugely popular ‘The Village Markets’ has suddenly closed down after 16 years.

The award-winning market was usually held at Burleigh Heads State School every first and third Sunday of the month.

The founders, Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller, have taken to social media to deliver the shock news, blaming the pandemic, wet weather and Stage 3 of the light-rail.

“The changing climate with the global pandemic, an economic downturn, the light-rail construction and relentless wet weather has not been easy on our small business and these elements combined, has led us to decide to take a new direction for The Village Markets,” the statement reads.

“Whilst working with small creative businesses is or combined passion, we will be taking this space online.”

The market will continue to hold pop-up events at Robina Town Centre, as well as pre-loved rack sale events across the coast.

The founders have hinted there is more to come.
