A man is lucky to be alive after falling 10 metres from a balcony at a backpackers hotel in Surfers Paradise.

Emergency crews rushed to a building along Beach Road just after 9.00pm on Tuesday, after receiving several triple zero calls about the incident.

Upon arrival, Queensland Ambulance Operations Supervisor Paul Young said they found a man had fallen from the fifth-floor balcony onto a second-floor roof.

“We’re led to believe there was some alcohol involved and he was near a balcony, but at this stage, it’s unknown how he fell from the balcony,” Mr Young said.

Fire crews were called in to help assist with the complex rescue operation.

Paramedics said the 28-year-old is extremely fortunate to have only escaped with fractures to his lower leg and minor head injuries.

“It was approximately a three-storey fall from the fifth floor to a second floor, where there was a metal overhang roof which cushioned his fall, otherwise had he fallen onto the concrete it could have been a different story,” Mr Young said.

The man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
