An investigation is underway after a fire broke out at an abandoned building in Surfers Paradise.

Firefighters were called to the property along Thornton Street around 8.30pm on Tuesday night.

It’s believed the blaze started in the ground floor of the building before quickly spreading.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said it took four crews around half an hour to bring under control, however the amount of damage the building sustained is unclear at this stage.

A Queensland Police spokesperson has confirmed the blaze is being treated as suspicious, with three people arrested at the scene.

Fire investigators will be head back to the property today to try and determine the exact cause.
