The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences had handed down its punishment to actor Will Smith after he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage.

Will Smith will be banned from attending all of the Academy’s events, including the Oscars, for ten years.

However, he will get to keep his gong for Best Actor and he will still be able to be nominated for future awards.

Smith issued a short statement on his ban for the next decade, saying he respected the decision.

At the March 27 televised ceremony, Smith walked up on stage after taking offence to a joke Rock made about his wife Jada and her hair loss, caused by a medical condition.

He then walked back to his seat, where he was heard yelling “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth!”

Smith resigned from the academy on April 1 and has issued statements apologising to Rock, the Oscars producers, nominees and viewers.
