Mario & Luigi: Brothership is out now for Nintendo Switch and is a return for the beloved RPG series, setting sail on an adventure that is really fun but not mind-blowing.

The game takes players on a journey through the vast world of Concordia, where Mario and Luigi must reunite a fractured continent. Aboard the whimsical Shipshape Island, a floating vessel with a magical tree for a sail, the brothers embark on a quest to reconnect the scattered islands and find their way back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

The game’s unique premise shines through its inventive gameplay mechanics. Players launch themselves from a circus-like cannon to explore diverse islands, each offering its own set of challenges and quests. This exploration-focused approach, combined with traditional RPG elements like character levelling, creates an engaging experience that keeps players invested in the brothers’ journey.

Brothership introduces a cast of charming new characters, such as the loveable Connie and the peculiar Snoutlet who will tell you “is not a pig” in a very funny interaction.

It also features familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom. The presence of characters like Peach and Bowser adds a nostalgic touch, blending the new setting with the classic Mario universe. These character interactions contribute significantly to the game’s lighthearted and entertaining atmosphere.

At the heart of Brothership’s gameplay are the Bros. Moves and Bros. Attacks, which cleverly utilize the siblings’ teamwork. These mechanics not only serve as tools for overcoming obstacles during exploration but also add a dynamic twist to the turn-based combat system which is the highlight of the title. The reliance on the brothers’ bond creates a satisfying gameplay loop that emphasises cooperation and strategy.

While Mario & Luigi: Brothership offers an enjoyable experience, it sometimes feels like an “RPG lite” or a beginner-friendly introduction to the genre. This approach may disappoint seasoned RPG players looking for more depth and complexity.

However, Nintendo’s trademark quality shines through, ensuring that even with its simplified elements, the game remains fun and engaging. Considering its charming presentation, innovative mechanics, and overall entertainment value, Mario & Luigi: Brothership earns a solid 7 out of 10, making it a worthwhile addition to the Switch library for Mario fans and RPG newcomers alike.
