If you’re looking to save big on your wedding, take notes from 2023’s least popular wedding day: January 31.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), just 35 out of 118,439 Australian couples got married on that day. Yep, it was even less popular than Christmas or Boxing Day!

So, why was January 31 so avoided? Simple: It was a Tuesday, smack in the middle of Australia’s sweltering summer, and right after the holiday break. Most Aussies were either sweating it out or just getting back to work, not to mention that school was starting up again. Oh, and the Australian Open? It drove up travel and hotel prices—bad timing for any wedding.

Hot Tip: Couples looking to save money can totally benefit from planning a wedding on these less-loved dates. Venues are cheaper, vendors are more available, and you might even score some off-peak discounts.

And with the cost of weddings in Australia averaging $40,700 (ouch!), midweek weddings start to look pretty appealing. So if you’re budget-conscious, maybe consider walking down the aisle on a quiet Tuesday. Just not on January 31 in 2025—since it’s a Friday that year, it’ll be a hot date!
