It’s been revealed a major part of Surfers Paradise will be shut to traffic as part of a major trial for the next stage of the suburb’s $100 million transformation.
Council has confirmed the “pedestrian friendly trial” will mean shutting down the 250 metre beachfront stretch from Hanlon Street to the Soul building for four months from August.
Aside from the road closure, Division 10 Councillor Darren Taylor said the revised design will see the tourism hub bask in more shade, greenery and open space, which is what the community feedback strongly supported.
“The Surfers Paradise Revitalisation Project reimagines the heart of the suburb and the updated design incorporates what the community wants,” Cr Taylor said.
“We have listened to what you said and this design has more shade, greenery and public open space.
“The updated design focuses on transforming the central precinct into a pedestrian-friendly zone to enhance safety, accessibility and visitor experience.
“This new space will be used for recreational and community activities, as well as small and large-scale events.”
The City has committed $100 million for the project to help revitalise Cavill Mall, Cavill Avenue and The Esplanade.
Gold Coasters are being urged to have their say on the updated design, with consultation open now until Monday, 28 April via gchaveyoursay.com.au/surfersparadise.
The feedback will be used to inform the next steps of the project.
