Insurance companies have now received more than 63,000 claims across southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales for damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

But they warn it’s still too early to give a figure for the total damage bill.

A total of 63,672 claims have now been lodged with the vast majority of those in southeast Queensland.

An additional 10,000 claims were lodged on the weekend as households and businesses continued the clean-up and got a better idea of the damage caused.

Most claims relate to food spoilage, wind damage and water ingress.

“The rise in claims count over the weekend is a reassuring sign that clean-up and recovery is well underway across many parts of southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales,” Insurance Council of Australia Deputy CEO Kylie Macfarlane said.

“While it is still too early to predict the total insured loss from this weather event, the claims data shows that the event is not as significant as first feared across the majority of the impacted zones.”
