Crews will begin the mammoth task of repairing the Gold Coast’s beaches, left devastated by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

All beaches remain closed and are expected to stay shut for days.

The vast majority of our coastline has suffered major scarping which is as high as 8 metres in some areas.

Our beaches are also littered with debris with many covered in blue bottles as well.

Mayor Tom  Tate is warning people to stay away from the foreshore.

“It’s still a dangerous place, the ground is saturated. Even if you’re a young kid it wouldn’t take much for it to collapse and you could fall down the scarping,” Mayor Tate said.

“We will start implementing to fix the access to our beaches and we’ll start clearing debris so we’ll have heavy equipment on the beaches.”

Council is working to secure dredging equipment to be able to pump sand back onto some of our worst affected beaches.

That is expected to arrive next week.

It’s hoped beaches from Broadbeach to Coolangatta may be able to reopen next week but other beaches will take more time.

“I give this undertaking that the beaches will be recovered and ready for the April school holidays,” Mayor Tate said.
