They say disasters bring out the best in people and the community spirit, but sadly it can sometimes also bring out the worst.

A man has been charged over an alleged assault at a flood evacuation centre in northern NSW which left another man in hospital.

Emergency crews were called to the centre on Dalley Street in Mullumbimby around 8pm on Sunday following reports of a fight.

Upon arrival, they found two men had been involved in a brawl.

A 26-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics for facial injuries before being taken to Byron Bay Hospital in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 44-year-old man who was taken to Byron Bay Police station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Byron Bay Local Court today.
