A Gold Coast driver has been hit with a massive fine and had his licence suspended after he was caught driving more than 50km/h over the speed limit in a school zone.
Police were conducting morning patrols outside a school in Southport on Wednesday, February 19, when they clocked a white Tesla travelling at 92km/h – more than double the 40km/h school zone speed limit.
Officers pounced on the driver, a 38-year-old man from Pacific Pines, issuing him with a $1,854 traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h.
He also received eight demerit points and an immediate six-month driver’s licence suspension.

Road Policing Chief Superintendent Garrath Channells slammed the man’s actions, admitting excessive speed remains a leading factor in fatal and serious injury crashes across the state.
“School zones exist for one crucial reason—to keep our children safe,” Chief Superintendent Channells said.
“Driving at these extreme speeds near children is inexcusable and will not be tolerated by police.
“Speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to stop quickly if a child crosses the road while entering or leaving school.
“We must all play our part in protecting the most vulnerable road users, especially our children.”
As of February 24, 37 lives have been lost on Queensland roads this year.
