A man accused of attempting to rape two women on the Gold Coast has been arrested and charged.

The 35-year-old allegedly grabbed a woman while she was walking along Hedges Avenue in Mermaid Beach in the first incident on the evening of September 24 last year.

Police allege the man covered her mouth and attempted to drag her towards Ken Mansbridge Park.

The woman managed to escape after a struggle and ran for help, with her attacker fleeing on foot.

The second attack occurred around 4am on January 19 to a woman who was walking along Duringan Street, Currumbin.

The 26-year-old was allegedly approached from behind by a man claiming to be armed with a knife, before being grabbed, assaulted and verbally threatened.

She also managed to break free from the man.

The accused Gold Coast man has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit rape, two counts of unlawful stalking and one count of deprivation of liberty.

He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court today, January 23.
