A section of one of the Gold Coast’s most popular beaches has been closed after a stack of debris washed ashore following the weekend downpour.
Rubbish including tampon wraps, soy sauce bottles, medication and hoses were found scattered along the iconic stretch of Kirra Beach on Sunday morning.
Save our Southern Gold Coast raised the alarm after sharing images of the debris to social media.
Council issued a statement a short time later, confirming a major cleanup was underway.
“A combination of human-generated debris has washed up in a section of beach between Kirra Beach and Kirra Groyne, following heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours,” A council spokerperson said.
“This section of beach has been closed as the City investigates and commences clean up.
“We ask the community to stay clear of this area and please report any sightings of debris on other parts of the beach to 1300 GOLDCOAST.
“The City will continue to provide updates”.
