A new report has confirmed what Gold Coast drivers had already suspected – that we were slugged excessive prices at the bowser in 2024.

According to RACQ, motorists across South East Queensland paid a record high average price for unleaded fuel last year.

On average, Gold Coast drivers paid over 190.9 cents per litre for regular unleaded, exceeding the 2023 average of 189.7cpl.

Interestingly, the most expensive suburbs to fill up over the year were Coombabah, Runaway Bay, Tugun, Stapylton and Alberton.

While the cheapest suburbs included Molendinar, Jacobs Well, Arundel, Ashmore and Australia Fair.

The data has prompted calls for Government intervention to regulate the failing market.

According to RACQ Economist Dr Ian Jeffreys, prices were “unrelentingly and consistently high” and without regulation, will only continue to rise.

“The increased average price reflected an increase in retail margins and provided further evidence of a failing market and the need for regulation,” Dr Jeffreys said.

“We’re calling on the new government to re-consider RACQ’s proposal to impose a five-cent daily cap on fuel price increases across the state to bring an end to dramatic and unjustified price hikes.”

There was some relief for diesel drivers in 2024, the annual average was 10 cents lower than the previous year, at 193.6cpl.
