A teenage boy has been arrested after smashing his way into a chemist in Southport early this morning.

The 16-year-old allegedly hurled a rock through a glass door in order to gain entry to the Knowledge Street pharmacy around 12.20am.

Once inside, he allegedly ransacked the store before stealing an unknown amount of property.

Police rushed to the scene as the boy was attempting to flee, sparking a footchase which eventually came to an end after about 300 metres.

The teen was taken into custody and is continuing to assist police with investigations.

Charges are yet to be laid.
