A man is due to front court today after sparking wild scenes on the M1 when he was captured driving erratically down the wrong side of the motorway.
Police received over 65 calls from concerned motorists who spotted the man driving an orange ute erratically south in the northbound lanes near Yatala around 11am on Saturday.
Drivers were forced to dodge the vehicle as it continued to travel in the wrong direction for over 22 kilometers.
Officers rushed to the scene and managed to put a rolling roadblock in place to slow traffic in the area before eventually intercepting the vehicle at Pimpama.
The driver, a 41-year-old man from Helensvale, was arrested at the scene.
He was taken to hospital for assessment before being released back into police custody.
“Police will allege the driver was not only dangerous but was also affected by some sort of drug or alcohol,” Superintendent Brett Jackson told the ABC.
The man was refused police bail to front Southport Magistrates Court today on a string of charges including one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, evasion, possess tainted property and possession of a knife.
