Nurses in the Tweed will join in on state-wide strike action across New South Wales today as they ramp up their fight for better pay.

It comes after negotiations between the Nurses Union and State Government broke down last week.

Nurses are calling for a pay rise of around 15 per cent, but have only been offered a rise of 3 per cent.

That’s despite NSW Police being given a 40 per cent boost just days ago.

As a result, hundreds of non-life threatening surgeries have been cancelled today, with more than 50,000 nurses and midwives walking off the job for the next 24 hours.

Every area of the hospital system is expected to be impacted by the industrial action, however health bosses insist life-saving medical assistance will still be available.

A rally is set to be held from 12pm at Hyde Park, with other rallies also taking place across Armidale, Broken Hill, Coffs Harbour, Crookwell, Moruya, Lismore, Port Macquarie, Taree and Tweed.
