The Gold Coast is on high alert today, with the threat of dangerous thunderstorms across the South East.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned there’s a chance we could see heavy rain, large hail and dangerous wind gusts from around lunchtime into the early evening.
Up to 20 millimetres of rain has been forecast to fall across the city, however, some areas could cop more than 50 millimetres depending on where the storms fall.
“Across the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas, this is where we could see isolated very dangerous thunderstorms,” Meteorologist Jonathan How said.
“These could bring giant hail, intense rainfall leading to flash flooding, as well as destructive winds”.
As a precaution, the City of Gold Coast has confirmed it will be opening sandbagging stations to help residents prepare.
The sandbagging stations will be open from 7am to 4pm and are located at the following locations:
Pimpama: 196 Old Pacific Highway, Pimpama (next to the City of Gold Coast Coomera Depot)
Bilinga: 42-44 Boyd Street, Bilinga (use the service road, next to the City of Gold Coast Tugun Depot)
Burleigh Heads: 61 Hutchinson Street, Burleigh Heads (Reedy Creek Waste and Recycling Centre)
The thunderstorm activity is being caused by inland trough, with the wet weather expected to stick around until at least Friday.
