UPDATE @ October 25 | A nine-year-old boy critically injured after the e-bike he was riding with his father was struck by a car has tragically died in hospital.

The pair were on a family bike ride along Robina Town Centre Drive in Robina around 6.15pm on Wednesday, when an out-of-control vehicle ploughed into them on the footpath.

According to police, witnesses reportedly saw the vehicle driving erratically just moments before the accident.

“We know from witnesses who were there that the driver was allegedly driving erratically moments before.. he had actually cut somebody off before he lost control,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.

“From that witness he did accelerate away and then shortly after that struck the centre traffic island before spearing across both lanes of traffic and striking the cyclists”.

The boy suffered life-threatening head injuries and had to be revived at the scene before being rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he sadly passed away overnight.

His 46-year-old father was also taken to hospital in a critical condition with head and arm injuries.
