A man has been left with critical head injuries after an alleged assault in Burleigh Heads.

An altercation broke out between two groups of males on First Ave at around 2.15am on Sunday morning.

A 22-year-old man was allegedly kicked in the back of the head during the incident.

The man fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete.

He was treated by paramedics before being transported to hospital suffering bleeding on the brain.

The man has since undergone surgery and remains in a critical condition.

Police say they’re looking into whether the two groups were known to each.

“We’re still investigating the matter, we’re trying to work out what the actions of everyone leading up to the disturbance were,” Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon told the ABC.

“All we know is the person who has kicked the young 22ypo he’s described as Islander in appearance, six foot tall, solid build in his early 20s.

“At that time he was wearing white sneakers and grey shirt and jeans.”
