The 2024 Emmy Awards featured a moving In Memoriam segment, honouring industry members who passed away in the last year. However, some viewers noticed the absence of Matthew Perry, who died in October 2023, sparking questions on social media.
“How in the world did the Emmys not include Matthew Perry?!?!” one user posted to X, while another asked, “Did I miss it, or did the Emmys not show Matthew Perry????”
Thing is, he wasn’t left out at all. He was honoured during the 2023 Emmys, which took place in January 2024 after being postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
His tribute featured the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There For You,” and concluded with his photo.

Perry, beloved for his role as Chandler Bing, passed away at 54 on October 28, 2023. He was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home, and his death was initially ruled accidental. However, the case was reopened earlier this year when the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that Perry died from “the acute effects of ketamine.”
Following his death, federal authorities launched an investigation into Hollywood doctors and others potentially involved in prescribing ketamine outside of medical necessity. Last month, multiple arrests were made, including Perry’s assistant and a woman known as the “Ketamine Queen.”
