A father and toddler have died after a pram rolled onto train tracks in a horrific accident in Sydney’s south.
Emergency services were called to Carlton Railway Station around 12.25pm on Sunday following reports a pram carrying two children had rolled from the platform onto the tracks.
Despite desperate efforts by first responders, a 2-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man died at the scene.
“Emergency services responded quickly and saw the pram under the train and could hear crying coming from underneath the train,” Superintendent Paul Dunstan told reporters.
A second 2-year-old girl and her 39-year-old mother were not injured and were taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition.
Superintendent Dunstan described the father’s act as “incredibly brave and heroic” as he attempted to save his daughters lives.
“He’s just gone into parent mode and tried to save his two young daughters and in doing so, it’s cost his life,” he said.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
