A teenage girl has been hailed a hero after she steered a Gold Coast school bus to safety after the driver suffered a suspected heart attack.
The bus had just left Aquinas College in Ashmore around 3.30pm on Monday, when the 70-year-old man behind the wheel reached for his chest before becoming unresponsive.
The 15-year-old student who was sitting in the front seat immediately jumped into action, grabbing the wheel of the bus and steering it into a median strip to avoid other traffic.
Authorities have credited the young girl’s quick thinking actions for saving the lives of the other 25 students on board.
“One of the teenage female students on the bus has managed to assist the driver, remove his hands and feet from the accelerator and stop the bus in a safe location,” Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor John Nolan said.
“Quite remarkable really, that a young student has come to the aid of the driver and managed to stop that bus safely and avoid any of her fellow students or passengers on board from being injured”.
The driver remains in a serious condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital this morning.
